American Sign Language ASL

American Sign Language (ASL) is a natural language for deaf communities in the US, English-speaking Canada, Southeast Asia, and West Africa. They use ASL to communicate. ASL interpreters allow communication with the deaf and the wider community.

American Sign Language interpreters understand the meaning and intentions in one language or sign language and express those meanings and intentions in the other language. They understand and manage cultural nuances, and the setting, and follow professional and ethical standards.

American Sign Language interpreters retain information and manage the flow of the communication, most often in simultaneous interpreting mode. Interpreters are needed in both one-on-one situations as well as group settings. This service is used in a variety of settings, such as the performing arts, schools, hospitals, medical offices, courtrooms, law offices, and government.

The sign interpreter uses VRI or in-person interpretation mode.

ASL interpreters need to be able to see their deaf or hard-of-hearing clients. Therefore, in-person or video-remote interpreting (VRI) configuration is necessary to interpret and translate sign language.

In-person interpreting requires the ASL interpreter to come onsite to interpret.

Video-remote interpretation (VRI) uses video and computers or mobile to allow the ASL interpreter to work remotely.
